My wife and I rented the Cavallino Verde house in Umbria for the month of June. Everything was as promised by Mario, the owner. The house was even more inviting and comfortable than the website photos suggest. Nor did the photos fully convey how wonderful and serene the panoramic view from the front was. The house is close to amenities. It’s about a 5 minute drive from the nearest village (Fratta Todina). Although it’s a small village it has a small supermarket, butcher, fruit and vegetable stand, and bakery so most provisions are available. Marsciano, a larger community, is 10 minutes away and virtually anything is available there. There is an open-air market on Mondays in Marsciano and we visited it weekly. There are also several great restaurants and wineries a short distance from the house. Two aspects that we particularly liked about the house’s location are the stunningly beautiful rural landscape and its proximity to any number of well-preserved Italian hill towns, both the small and unheralded ones and those that make it into a guidebook. With few exceptions, we did not travel more than 45 minutes from the house the entire time that we were there. We chose the house because it had four bedrooms and two living rooms. We expected family and friends to visit us throughout the month, with as many as eight people staying in the house at various times, and wanted to make sure that we would not be on top of one another. We had eight people on several occasions and the house and expansive veranda delivered in this regard. We never felt crowded or in each other’s way. The house is well appointed with bedding, towels and kitchen equipment. Beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms were all equipped with reading lights by the beds. We were there in the summer and the property is in the country so mosquitos were a constant issue. The windows and doors all have screens so with diligence the mosquitos can be managed on the inside. But outside is a different story. Most people visiting us were fine. Some, including me, had an intense reaction to the bites. We had some issues with water supply but Mario was immediately responsive and it seems that the problem has been addressed. This is also not unusual in a rural setting in an area dealing with intermittent dry periods. Whenever an issue emerged Mario responded quickly, courteously and he addressed it. These shortcomings were more than offset by the advantages of this beautiful property. If you’re looking for a quiet, comfortable, relaxing place to spend a week or a month in a spectacular part of Italy, this will suit you. We would stay there again, but maybe in another season, to dodge those mosquitos.
